Audience research: feedback for my documentary and my ancillary products

I wanted to make sure my colour palette is obvious to give a sense of branding and a housestyle across my products. Everyone that received this form replied that my colour palette is obvious, which enforces my branding of my products.
I asked my audience feedback group about my sound and picture quality, and almost all of the answers were that my quality was fine. Some answered that it was uneven so I am editing the volume on my documentary to make it more even.

In my audience feedback, I received comments noting that it would be worth not repeating interviewees' names as they have already appeared on the screen. I then deleted any repeated names as this made sense. I also had a comment that said I should shorten the statistics so only the important information comes up on the screen, so I did it.

Progress shots 30.11.17

Today I added a tagline underneath the title as this is a convention of TV listings magazine articles. I made this slightly larger in size than the copy to make it stand out more. This copy is in a small font size as if this was at normal print size, it would be readable, but because the two pages are downsized to fit on the page the size needs to be smaller to be in proportion.
On my documentary, I added in some footage from a local technology store as this as a comment left on my audience feedback, suggesting that I open up the documentary onto a global debate. I have scripted another piece with my presenter and I have put in the footage of technology at the end of the documentary.

Progress shots 24.11.17

Today I started my double page spread. I added in the main image, and put in the title of the documentary and website and social media links. I tried to put a barrier around the image, and
I didn't put the barrier all the way down because the content would not fit proportionately if I had, plus it makes all of it quite dark and not aesthetically pleasing. I decided to take the barrier off, and move the main image to the left and the name to the right. I then put the barrier along the top and side again, and make it black with the date white. I then edited I the copy, making a drop cap on the first letter to conform to conventions of magazines, which I learnt how to do from a tutorial online, http://www.indesignskills.com/tutorials/drop-cap-indesign/#  . I selected a quote out of the copy and edited it between the other paragraphs with a larger font size. This looks aesthetically pleasing while drawing reader's attention to the article and making them curious about the rest of the text.
I also changed the outline of the masthead and the quote to green to adhere to my colour palette of black, white and green, which is modern and stylish, just like modern day technology. I then took inspiration from https://www.vodafone.com/content/dam/vodafone/parents/assets_2013/pdf/vodafone_digital_parenting_issue3_lo_res.pdf
Which inspired me to add a 'Popular apps' section, in which I added logos from popular apps into my double page spread and the name of the app. This would help readers recognise the topic of the documentary but also make the double page spread more aesthetically pleasing. I also added 'tips for controlling settings' for both parent and students to read to help prevent distractions and make the phone safer to use. I edited in pictures of recent iPhones to anchor the meaning of the documentary, and to make the pages more aesthetically pleasing.

This is my documentary so far. I am still missing some shots at the beginning and one of the interviews is in the wrong place, so I will correct this.

Progress shots: 23.11.17

Today I added in more presenter shots and more shots of students working. I also added in some background music that is upbeat and suitable for a documentary. I subtitled the statistics in my video with the font I have used consistently over my three products, and moved the text above my presenter's head so that they are visible. I also changed the text to pure black colour, and not outlined in white, which makes it different to the names on the interviews. I did this to make them visible but it also helps the statistics stand out and draw the audience's attention. I think putting the statistics in subtitles helps provide the audience with more information about the topic, so I conformed to this conventions of documentaries.

Production: Ancillary newspaper advert

This is my final newspaper advert. I have followed conventions of typical newspaper adverts as this would help readers recognise what channel it is being broadcasted on and recognise the signs of the texts to realise it is about technology, along with the subject of education which is anchored by the pun by the date and the name of the documentary.

Progress shots of advert 21.11.17

I edited a fake website url and a fake twitter handle onto the advert to advertise to the reader to find more information about the documentary, and this is a convention of newspaper adverts.

Audience research: feedback on my ancillary advert.

I created this form to help choose what slogan I should put next to the time and date the documentary would be broadcasted, as this is often a convention of newspaper adverts. The responses show that "Class starts on Friday 15th December, 7pm" was the most popular, so I edited this into my advert.

Production: progress on ancillary newspaper advert

I edited two of the 4 messages so that they looked like they were coming from the girl in the middle. I used a brush in photoshop to smoothen the edges of the message box and then use the colour dropper to get the east green I needed to draw the point on the other side of the message box. I then edited these onto my newspaper advert, along with the grey symbol that means someone is typing above her head to anchor the meaning that she is typing.

I then edited two black boxes at the bottom of the picture, due to the usual conventions of channel 4 newspaper adverts. I used the same font as my documentary on my newspaper advert to maintain a sense of house style and branding. I wanted to put a catchphrase before the date and time to be broadcasted to entice audiences to watch it, so I thought I could use a phrase school related. I thought about using 'registration starts at' but this may confuse people as it sounds as if people need to register to watch the program. I am going to create a poll of possible slogans for this to find one.

Progress shots 20.11.17

Today I filmed my new presenter, with two more scenes to shoot before they're done, them I just need to edit it all together. I also revised footage I have taken over the past 3 months and added in shots between interviews, as I have plenty of cutaways but not between shots.

This is the second draft of my documentary. Since this draft, I have changed presenter, and have a couple more presenter clips to film before they are finished.

Progress shots: 17.11.17

Today I added the time and date the documentary would be broadcasted and the channel 4 logo. I added them on different layers so that both images can be seen.

I texted these messages to a contact without a number so that I could edit them onto my advert. As there was no number attached to the contact, a message saying that the text hadn't delivered came up, so I edited these out on snapchat with a white brush. I will crop each one out as separate pictures and edit these onto the advert.

I realised that if I put the channel logo on the top right then I would not be able to fit the fourth piece of text on the picture and it would not be equally distributed. I moved the logo and put the fourth piece of text on. However, now the text pieces are the wrong way round, as they should be coming from the person. I will get a text from the other way around and edit this on.

Progress shots 16.11.17

Today I started my first ancillary product, the newspaper advert. Following my flat plan, I took the picture I took and put it into photoshop, and used a brush to colour the background plain white, to brighten the picture and make it look more professional. I am in the process of putting this image into InDesign to start overlaying the text onto the main image.

Progress shots: 15.11.17

Today I added in some more footage and edited that. I changed my font throughout the programme, as the font I have chosen is more modern and simple. I will use this font in both my ancillary products to continue a sense of branding and house style.

Progress shots: 9.11.17- Audience feedback

Today I added in an interview with a teacher. I also changed the time that names and occupations come up, from 1.6 seconds to 3 seconds, due to some verbal feedback from a member of my focus group. Ella saw the original length of the text that played on the screen, and advised me to make it longer, so I changed the time to 3 seconds.

Production: Ancillary product flatplans

This is the flat plan I will be using to design my advert with, as it will feature aspects of both education and technology, and captures attention with a closeup and features modern day texting features that will be recognisable to all ages due to the trend in iPhone messaging. I also made the name and date broadcasted different to normal newspaper adverts, as using the text-style format to inform the audience of the name and time will fit in more with the rest of the advert, and will draw more attention than just a white box along the bottom of the page.
This flat plan is a mid shot of a person surrounded by a collage of small pictures of technological devices. I included the website for Channel 4, the logo for that channel and the name of the documentary alongside the time it would be broadcasted. I did not choose this draft as there was no hint in the advert that the documentary focuses on both schoolwork and technology.
This flat plan is a too plain compared to most of channel 4's normal advert , as usually they are quite bold or shocking.  It does feature both aspects of my documentary's topic, but it does not draw the audience's attention. It has the normal conventions of the name and time of the documentary, and the channel's website along the bottom but I chose the other flat plan over this one.
This is a draft of a flatplan for my TV listings magazine. I adhered to the conventions of normal TV listings magazines. I will either put 'tech takes education' as a slogan about the topic of my documentary, or the actual name of the documentary, as some articles have a topical sentence as that is what the article is about. I have decided to make the picture of a person in the dark with the phone lighting up their face to make the page striking and the background a black colour so the text can be white. However, the article is usually on a double page spread. I redesigned my flatplan due to this.
This is the flat plan I am using for my TV listings magazine. It is designed to be on a double page spread, with the picture on one side and the article on the other, like many articles in TV listings magazines. The masthead is the name of the documentary, and will be half as big as the picture to draw attention. I am also going to put the twitter name of the documentary's twitter page, and a hashtag for the audience to use whilst the documentary is being broadcasted.

Audience feedback: documentary titles

I created a form to get feedback from my focus group and others on what I should call my documentary. The results were tied between 'Tech takes education' and 'Technology takeover: in education'. Due to the similarity in votes I have chosen to call my documentary 'Technology takeover: in education'. I am now going to use this name to feature the documentary in my ancillary products.
